🦈Dun-dun…The terror of an unexpected bill
Raise your hand if this has happened to you. ✋
You are going about your day in a state of relatively blissful ignorance.😧
Just when you least expect it, a shocking bill arrives.
Maybe it’s a repair estimate for your car. Or a stern notice demanding payment on an old credit card balance you had forgotten about. Or a crazy high invoice for a necessary medical procedure.
What happens in your body? Rapid heartbeat…difficulty breathing…breaking out in a sweat? Insert your own terror response here.
It can bring up so much terror around safety in the physical world. The mind immediately catastrophizes while shame rises from a deep, familiar place that scolds you for somehow messing up…again.
These moments do not have to arouse terror. They can actually be moments of growth, inspiration, creativity and expansion. Really.
I recently received my own unexpected bill for a substantial dollar amount. Years ago, I would have either panicked, gone into denial/avoidance, or both.
This time however, I was not terribly triggered. I was able to think calmly of possible solutions. I asked for divine guidance and was able to trust it. In fact, I had already received the guidance in advance (whoa!). I had woken up that morning realizing that a certain income source could be expanded. But I was planning to use the extra funds for something else. Oh well.
This is progress, and I am celebrating it. I am thankful for years of work on surface level symptoms of lack (and fear of lack) to get to the deeper traumas that were calling out for healing. It is really nice to see some payoff in terms of:
- My response to potential triggers
- The effortless solution that came to mind
- The speed at which I moved from shock and confusion, to clarity and resolution
Although I am proud of my strong commitment to healing my money issues and the resilience it has taken to come this far, I did not do this work alone. Many healers, coaches and advisers helped me to get to this place. In this moment, I pause and bow to them.

Know that this is an opportunity to choose a different response, and that it will take time and support to heal the trauma before you can consistently respond differently.
It takes courage to face an unexpected expense head-on. But you can do it. Stay with the process, let it teach you. And get support.
